Species on the Edge
Surveying Oil Beetles

Species on the Edge is a joint programme lead by NatureScot in partnership with seven nature conservation charities, to research the distribution and ecology 37 priority species found along Scotland's coast and islands. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a four and a half year programme of conservation work to help species in decline.

One of these declining species is the Short-necked Oil Beetle. Initially only found on the Isle of Coll, increased awareness has led to more populations being found across Scotland, including the Outer Hebrides. These are rare beetles and their small, scattered populations increase their risk of extinction. Mapping their distribution and learning more about their natural history can help protect this vulnerable species.
